    The SNAP Outreach Specialist leads community engagement, enrollment, and outreach efforts in Philadelphia to assist communities accessing SNAP benefits (food stamps). They will provide direct assistance in applying for and renewing SNAP, as well as health coverage programs (Medicaid and CHIP) as needed. They will be trained on the complex benefits eligibility rules, the application and verification processes, and best practices for community outreach and engagement. The ideal candidate will be able to perform the responsibilities below with specific personal qualities while meeting the position’s requirements.

    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Provide in-person and remote SNAP eligibility screenings and application assistance in Philadelphia and the surrounding counties..
    • Identify and build relationships with community based partner organizations that work with populations in need of food assistance.
    • Provide in-person SNAP application support at community outreach events.
    • Lead presentations on SNAP benefits for community partner organizations and SNAP recipients.
    • Conduct follow-up to help ensure applications are approved, that applicants receive the correct benefit amount in a timely manner, and to help resolve issues as they arise.
    • Track client applications timely and thoroughly using PHAN’s Salesforce database.
    • Attend in person outreach events on a weekly basis.
    • Provide clear, fair, and accurate in-person, phone, and virtual assistance with applications for SNAP benefits and Medicaid or CHIP as needed.
    • Help people navigate complex rules, systems, and paperwork.
    • Identify stories and feedback from the community to improve PHAN’s outreach and advocacy.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Experience in community organizing, sales, canvassing, outreach, or other community engagement work.
    • Able to work from home and travel regularly within Philadelphia and the surrounding counties.
    • Must be able to complete all the requirements, including a background check and child abuse clearance.
    • Bachelor’s degree (any field relevant to this work) or associate’s degree with significant work experience.
    • Passion for social justice.
