    Description

    Rising Hope UMC is a faith-based community dedicated to serving our neighbors experiencing poverty and homelessness. Through ministries such as our Food Market, Rising Hope Kitchen, Hope Closet, Hypothermia Shelter, and Drop-in Center, we provide both physical and spiritual sustenance in an inclusive and compassionate environment.

    Position Summary

    Hypothermia Coordinator plays a pivotal role in overseeing year-round hypothermia services and managing the shelter program during the winter season. This position requires strong organizational skills, effective communication, cultural sensitivity, and a commitment to creating a welcoming environment for all guests.

    Hypothermia Coordinator reports to the Emergency Services Manager.

    This is a full-time position with varied hours depending on the season. The schedule will primarily be Monday–Friday, daytime hours, however, the schedule will include on-call evening, weekend, and overnight support during expanded sheltering. Some nights and weekends required.

    Hypothermia Coordinator Responsibilities

    Year-Round Responsibilities

    • Maintain a culture that exemplifies Rising Hope’s core tenets of creating a loving and inclusive environment for all persons.
    • Exemplify the standards necessary to lead within a faith community environment.
    • Build positive relationships with guests from diverse backgrounds.
    • In collaboration with the Emergency Services Manager, manage the hiring process for expanded sheltering staff.
    • Work with Emergency Services Manager and the Day-time Care Coordinator to conduct needs assessments, make referrals, and assist with shelter entry screenings for guests experiencing homelessness.
    • Ensure all required documentation is received and data inputs are completed in an accurate and timely fashion for tracking and reporting for guests.
    • Ensure accurate data quality across all databases.
    • Maintain progress notes on shelter guests.
    • Assist in recruiting additional faith based and non-faith based organizations as partners in our sheltering efforts.
    • Help with training volunteers, ensuring the fellowship hall remains clean, sanitized, and orderly.

    Hypothermia Season (November – March)

    • Manage daily operations of the hypothermia shelter program.
    • Train and support staff and volunteers on tasks related to hypothermia/extended sheltering needs.
    • Create and oversee Resident Service Specialist (RSS) staff schedules.
    • Create and oversee Volunteer schedules and tasks specific to this department.
    • Assist with emergency responses during extreme weather, including extended drop-in hours and extreme cold services.
    • Provide backup support to the hypothermia team leader or program staff when all options for coverage have been exhausted.

    Non-Hypothermia Season (April – October)

    • Complete an annual review of hypothermia operations, seeking input from staff, volunteers, and guests, and implement program improvements.
    • Strategize potential plans for inclement weather days that fall outside of hypothermia season.
    • Explore opportunities for expanded sheltering at alternative locations.

    Skills and Qualifications

    • Ability to lift/pull up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks such as standing, bending, or walking for extended periods.
    • Strong organizational, communication, and customer service skills.
    • Comfortable with data collection and digital record-keeping.
    • Ability to work effectively in a team environment with diverse populations.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in health, human services, social services, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
    • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in human services, social services, or a related field.
    • Experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness, mental health challenges, substance use, or trauma.
    • Familiarity with nonprofit organizations and faith-based community settings.
    • Proficiency in both Google and Microsoft Office platforms.
