    Description

Our Children Oregon is hiring a Legislative Advocacy Fellow for the 2027 session! This role averages 20 hours per week at $30 per hour, from mid-November 2026 through mid-July 2027. You will track key bills, turn partner conversations into policy recommendations, connect organizations with the Children's Agenda coalition, and learn the behind-the-scenes of the Oregon legislative process. The role is remote, with occasional in-person work in Salem.

Help change Oregon's policies for children and families

Oregon's laws shape whether children grow up with stable homes, strong schools, healthy communities, and families who can make ends meet. Much of that is decided during the legislative session. We are looking for a Legislative Advocacy Fellow who wants to help change policy in Oregon in support of strong families and child well-being.

Our Children Oregon is a nonpartisan, statewide children's advocacy nonprofit. We lead the Children's Agenda, a coalition of more than 150 partner organizations working together on climate and sustainability, economic well-being, education, physical and mental health, and family and community. During the 2027 session, the Fellow will be at the center of that work. You will help us track bills, hear from partners, and turn what we learn into action.

This opportunity is suited to individuals with an interest in social change, including folks experienced with macro social work, political science, communications, and journalism. Skills gained through community work, lived experience, or a path outside of school count here. We will support you in learning the behind-the-scenes of the Oregon legislative process, applying an equity lens to policy ideas, and building relationships with advocates across the child well-being field.

What a typical day can include:

    • Developing policy recommendations out of a conversation with advocates and families across the state.
    • Connecting organizations with our coalition so more voices can take part.
    • Collecting and communicating information on the progress of key bills.
    • Drafting action alerts, testimony, blogs, and social media content for priority legislative efforts.
    • Working with our Communications Director to turn materials like testimony into blogs, graphics, and more.

Over the session, the Fellow will also help develop a legislative scorecard and analyze how legislative concepts affect children and families.

    Role details:

    • Hours: The role averages 20 hours per week, with flexibility from week to week as your schedule allows.
    • Pay: $30 per hour.
    • Term: Mid-November 2026 through mid-July 2027.
    • Location: Remote. We prefer a candidate who will join us in-person in Salem on occasion.
    • Supervisor: The Policy and Advocacy Director supervises the Fellow

    What we are looking for:

    • Must be an Oregon resident.
    • You understand how policies affect diverse communities and bring an equity lens to your work.
    • You have a basic understanding of the legislative process, or you are excited to learn it quickly.
    • You write well and can translate ideas across formats, such as testimony, blogs, and social media.
    • You are organized, take initiative, communicate, and keep track of your tasks.
    • You follow through on your commitments and hold yourself to our team's culture and norms.

    Nice-to-haves, but not requirements:

    • Experience with policy advocacy, such as writing comments, testifying to a public body, or reading legislation, is a plus.
    • Journalism background.
    • Graduate-level study or recent graduate in social work, political science, communications, or journalism.
    • Oregon legislative familiarity.

    Note before you apply:

We know great candidates don't always arrive in a perfect package; if you don't check every box, we still want to hear from you! At Our Children Oregon, we hire for character, curiosity, and commitment, instead of simply credentials. If this role speaks to you and you believe you can grow into it, please apply.

Position is open until filled; the first application review will be at the end of October.
