About Geeking Out Kids of Color (GOKiC)

Geeking Out Kids of Color (GOKiC) is a BIPOC-led nonprofit organization dedicated to liberating BIPOC youth through technology, education, and mentorship. We build and sustain youth programs rooted in community, computer science, and consciousness, creating opportunities for young people to develop digital literacy, leadership, creativity, and problem-solving skills.

Our project-based technology curricula integrate computer science and emerging technologies with anti-racism, anti-sexism, multiculturalism, social-emotional learning, and decolonization frameworks. Through hands-on learning, mentorship, and connections with BIPOC professionals and community members, we create culturally responsive spaces where young people can explore technology, strengthen their identities, build community, and envision new possibilities for themselves and their futures.

Job Summary

The Assistant Educator supports GOKiC’s mission to liberate BIPOC youth through technology and mentorship by helping deliver culturally responsive, decolonized technology education programs. Working closely with a Lead Educator, the Assistant Educator supports classroom instruction, curriculum preparation and adaptation, student engagement, and relationship-building with youth and families.

This is a part-time, 18-hour-per-week position supporting GOKiC programming in Federal Way, WA. The role provides hands-on experience in technology education and youth development, along with opportunities for continued professional growth and development as an educator.

Essential Functions

The responsibilities below represent an approximate breakdown of how time may be allocated throughout the role. Responsibilities may shift based on the program calendar and student needs. For example, curriculum preparation and professional development may increase during school breaks when students are not in session.

Teaching & Program Support | Approximately 60%

• Assist the Lead Educator in preparing for and facilitating in-person classroom activities.
• Support students through project-based technology and computer science activities, adjusting support based on individual learning needs and under the direction of the Lead Educator.
• Help maintain a positive, engaging, inclusive, and productive classroom environment.
• Support classroom management and student engagement.
• Assist with tracking student attendance and other program information.
• Reflect on classroom sessions with the Lead Educator and team to identify successes, challenges, and opportunities for improvement.

Curriculum Development & Preparation | Approximately 25%

• Collaborate with the Lead Educator and curriculum team to prepare and adapt curriculum for upcoming program sessions.
• Participate in testing and refining curriculum to support quality, engagement, accessibility, and student enjoyment.
• Participate in team “teach-ins” to build knowledge and demonstrate understanding of curriculum and technology topics.
• Assist with organizing and maintaining curriculum materials in Google Drive.
• Support the preparation of curriculum supply and food lists in coordination with the Lead Educator.

Youth & Family Engagement | Approximately 5%

• Support student recruitment and retention efforts.
• Build positive relationships with participating youth and families.
• Help showcase program successes and student engagement.
• Capture photos and/or videos of program activities when appropriate and in accordance with GOKiC policies.

Professional Development | Approximately 5%

• Participate in relevant trainings, workshops, and professional development opportunities.
• Engage with readings, resources, and learning opportunities connected to GOKiC’s mission and programming.
• Participate in professional growth and development processes.

Administrative & Team Coordination | Approximately 5%

• Respond to work-related communications in a timely and professional manner.
• Participate in applicable staff meetings, site huddles, and supervisor check-ins.
• Support documentation and sharing of program highlights and student engagement.
• Submit program-related expenses and documentation in a timely manner when applicable.

Qualifications

• Experience or strong interest in working with multicultural youth in educational, after-school, or community-based settings.
• Interest in teaching computer science, coding, and/or technology; basic computing or coding knowledge is preferred.
• Foundational understanding of teaching, classroom management, youth development, and/or social-emotional learning.
• Commitment to creating culturally responsive, inclusive, and affirming learning environments.
• Basic understanding of racial equity and the ways identity and positionality influence educational spaces.
• Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with youth, families, community partners, and team members.
• Ability to take direction, collaborate closely with a Lead Educator, and implement curriculum and program activities as directed.
• Adaptability and ability to balance classroom, curriculum, and administrative responsibilities.
• Basic project-management and organizational skills, including planning, meeting deadlines, and following through on responsibilities.
• Competency using PCs, Microsoft Office, Google Drive, Google Calendar, Google Docs, and other common digital tools.
• Ability to successfully complete required background checks.
• Multilingual skills, particularly Spanish, are a plus.

Schedule & Working Conditions

This is a part-time position scheduled for 18 hours per week supporting GOKiC programming in Federal Way, WA.

• Availability is generally required Monday–Friday between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM, with the majority of direct programming occurring between approximately 2:00–6:00 PM.
• The specific weekly schedule will be based on assigned program days, preparation time, meetings, and other program responsibilities.
• Occasional evening or weekend availability may be required for meetings, events, or other program activities.
• This role requires regular in-person participation at the assigned Federal Way program site, with some administrative, curriculum, or professional development activities potentially completed remotely.
• Reliable, independent transportation is required.
• Must be willing and able to travel within the Greater Seattle area when necessary to meet in-person program requirements.
• Must be able to take direction from experienced team members and effectively implement curriculum and program activities as directed.
• Must be committed to maintaining an environment where youth and staff feel safe, supported, respected, and encouraged.
• Team members are expected to responsibly care for organizational equipment issued for their role.
• Must be able to lift and transport program materials and equipment, including laptops, robots, binders, and similar supplies.

Collaboration & Support

This is not a managerial role. The Assistant Educator works collaboratively with the Lead Educator and other assigned program staff to support successful programming and positive student experiences.

When working alongside other educators, assistants, volunteers, or support staff, the Assistant Educator is expected to communicate effectively, assist with program responsibilities, share feedback, and contribute to a positive and collaborative learning environment.

Compensation & Benefits

Pay Range: $23.00–$26.00 per hour
