Description
CIS- NYC seeks a full-time, in-person Immigration Staff Attorney to provide legal counsel and representation to low-income immigrants and their families. The position is ideal for an attorney committed to immigrant rights, access to justice, and community-based legal services.
Position Responsibilities:
- Provide legal consultations and assess eligibility for immigration relief.
- Manage a diverse caseload involving family-based immigration, asylum, U Visas, TPS, humanitarian visas, adjustment of status, naturalization, waivers, nonimmigrant visas, and removal of proceedings.
- Represent clients before USCIS, EOIR, the Department of State, and New York Family Court.
- Prepare and review applications, motions, briefs, supporting evidence, and other legal filings.
- Represent clients at USCIS interviews and Immigration Court hearings.
- Conduct legal research and remain current on immigration laws, regulations, and policies.
- Supervise legal staff and support effective case management and workflow.
- Maintain accurate, confidential client files and case-management records.
- Collaborate with social workers and participate in community outreach and legal workshops.
- Track case outcomes and contribute to program reporting and advocacy efforts.
- Additional responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
- Admission to practice law in a U.S. jurisdiction; New York admission preferred.
- Two years of immigration law experience preferred.
- Bilingual English/Spanish required.
- Excellent legal research, writing, analytical, communication, and client-service skills.
- Strong organizational and case management abilities.
- Ability to work independently, manage deadlines, and adapt to changes in immigration law.
- Commitment to serving clients from diverse cultural, racial, socioeconomic, religious, gender, and LGBTQ+ backgrounds.
