  • Mission

Founded in 1943, the Waterford Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and one of the nation’s earliest community-based historic preservation organizations. The Waterford village and surrounding landscape—about 1,420 acres of historic buildings, farmland, and open space—were designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970. Our mission is to preserve Waterford’s historic buildings, open spaces, and heritage crafts, and use education to deepen public understanding of life and work in an early American rural community in Loudoun County.

    About Us

The Waterford Foundation is a nonprofit historic preservation and education organization dedicated to protecting the buildings, open spaces, and traditional crafts of the Waterford National Historic Landmark. Its work is grounded in stewardship, education, community engagement, and sharing a complete and inclusive understanding of local history.

The Foundation serves Loudoun County residents, students, educators, artisans, visitors, historians and future generations. Through the Waterford Fair, Craft School, Second Street School, tours, lectures, trail events, and other public programs, it connects people with Waterford’s history, landscape, and living traditions.
