FRIENDS OF THE MILFORD PUBLIC LIBRARY

  • Mission

The Friends of the Milford Public Library (FOML) is an all-volunteer, 501(c)3 non-profit organization devoted to supporting the Milford Public Library. Libraries have an ever-growing impact in their communities as a source of information and activity centers. The goal of the Friends is to make a difference in the Milford community by supporting quality library services which enhance the reading, educational and cultural opportunities available to the citizens of Milford. All proceeds raised by the Friends are used to fund children and adult programs, museum and theater passes, and expenses not covered by the Milford City Budget. Library programs are selected and scheduled byMilford Public Library staff and are free to the public.

    About Us

There are references to Friends of the Library dating back to the 1880s. The modern Friends of the Milford Library can trace its beginnings to the early 1980s. In 1981, there were significant budget cuts in the Milford city budget including cuts to the Milford Library budget. A group of citizens felt strongly about the need for continuing library services in Milford and the Friends of the Milford Public Library was formed.

Over the years the organization had various levels of involvement and in 2014-2015, FOML was revitalized and began its evolution to the current organization.

The Milford City budget contains a small line item for library programming expenses but it does not cover the majority of the need. The Friends of the Milford Library funds programming and special activities. The Friends advocate for the library and library services. Volunteer opportunities are available for our members.
