    About Us

Onondaga Audubon, established in 1951, is the local chapter of the National Audubon Society in Central New York and the eastern Lake Ontario basin. Our mission is to promote the conservation of native birds and wildlife through awareness, education, and research. We aim to fulfill our mission by increasing awareness of local conservation issues, organizing educational outreach, and conducting research to inform our members and the public. We offer various programs, field trips, and courses, and keep our members informed via newsletters and social media.

We manage two public sanctuaries: Derby Hill Bird Observatory and Noyes Sanctuary in Oswego County. Derby Hill features a professional hawk counter each spring, collecting data on raptor migrations, which is reported to the Hawk Migration Association of North America. We also operate a MOTUS tower that records data on flying birds, bats, and insects.

Additionally, we monitor wintering Bald Eagles and improve nesting habitats for Common Terns on Onondaga Lake in Syracuse, New York. We provide scholarships for educators to attend the Hog Island Audubon Camp in Maine, and hosted the New York State Ornithological Association's annual conference in 2022.
