  • Mission

Advocacy. We amplify the voices of our clients with tenacity. We recognize that our values must be backed up by our actions, and we strive to live out our ideals every day.

Justice. We strive to make fair and equal access to justice possible for clients and the entire DC community. We act with courage, creativity, and conviction and persist in the face of challenges.

Community. We are a strong pillar for our community. We recognize the value of having a spectrum of experiences in our staff, including legal expertise, lived experience, client-centered thinking, and fresh perspectives. We have a collaborative, inclusive, and welcoming workplace.

Collaboration. We work together as a team for greater impact. We work across units and practice areas to best serve our mission. We collaborate with our clients as partners to advance justice. Our work is strengthened by partnerships with the larger DC justice community.

Progress. We learn from past experience, take on new challenges, and push to become better at our work every day. By constantly improving ourselves, we support the larger collective goal of a fairer, more equitable community in the District.

    About Us

Legal Aid DC is a nonprofit organization with an approximately $18 million annual budget and a staff of approximately 125 employees. Our work is supported through public and private grants and private fundraising from individuals, law firms, and other contributors.

Since 1932, Legal Aid has provided civil legal assistance to clients in individual cases and engaged in systemic reform. Currently, we provide individual representation in consumer law, domestic violence/family law, housing, public benefits, and immigration matters. We also help people with the collateral consequences of their involvement with the criminal justice system. From the experiences of our clients, we identify opportunities for law reform, public policy advocacy, and systemic impact and appellate litigation. Legal Aid also administers the DC Resource Bridge, a single access point for legal services in the District.

Legal Aid believes that meaningful pursuit of our anti-poverty mission requires an unwavering commitment to racial justice and equity. We aspire both to reflect the rich racial diversity of the communities we serve and to value, respect, and empower our staff and clients to be effective agents of change.
