Women in Leadership
Mission
Our Mission
To dismantle inequality and empower women and girls to exercise their rights, build economic independence, and lead within their communities.
About Us
Women in Leadership (WIL Uganda) is a grassroots, women-led organisation based in Busembatia, a rural community in Eastern Uganda.
We work directly with women and girls to address inequality and create pathways to leadership, education, and economic independence.
What We Do
We deliver community-based programmes focused on:
- Sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR)
- Gender-based violence prevention and advocacy
- Women’s literacy and education
- Economic empowerment (tailoring, crafts, business skills)
- Digital skills and access (Tech for Girls)
- Youth media and storytelling (Teen Voices Journalism Project)
Our programmes are delivered both in local schools and through community-based initiatives, working closely with local leaders, health workers, and women’s groups.
Our Approach
We believe sustainable change happens when programmes are rooted in the community. Our work is led by local staff and shaped by the needs and experiences of the women and girls we serve.
We combine grassroots delivery with international collaboration, creating opportunities for knowledge exchange, learning, and long-term impact.
Internship Programme (Uganda)
We offer a structured international internship programme for students and young professionals seeking hands-on experience in global development.
Interns live and work in the community, contributing directly to programme delivery while developing leadership, communication, and project management skills.
Interns work closely with both our In-Country Programme Manager in Uganda and our UK-based CEO, gaining a unique dual perspective on grassroots programme delivery and international strategy.
We work with universities to support academic credit where required.
Fundraising Model
Our internships are fundraising-based rather than fee-based. Participants fundraise to support programme delivery, accommodation, and community impact.
This approach ensures accessibility while directly contributing to the sustainability of our work.
Girls Who Lead Global Bursary
We are committed to ensuring that access to international opportunities does not depend on income.
10% of every participant’s fundraising contributes to the Girls Who Lead Global Bursary, which fully funds a young woman (aged 18–30, UK-based) from a low-income or underrepresented background to join the programme.
Each cohort funds the next.
