  • Mission

    🌱 Our Mission:

At Akuratatha, our mission is to uplift underprivileged children and families in rural Sri Lanka through education, care, and love. We believe that every child deserves a chance to dream, grow, and succeed, no matter their background.

    We run programs to:

    • Teach English and life skills to children and teenagers
    • Support orphaned girls in a local children's home
    • Provide preschool education for the youngest learners
    • Empower families through community development

We welcome volunteers from around the world to become part of our family β€” not just as helpers, but as mentors, friends, and role models. Together, we create a place of hope, kindness, and transformation.

    About Us

    πŸ’› About Akuratatha

Akuratatha is a small but deeply committed grassroots organization based in Akuressa, Southern Sri Lanka. Born from compassion and community need, we serve as a bridge between local families and global volunteers who want to make a difference in the lives of disadvantaged children.

    🌍 Whom We Serve

    We support:

    • 14 girls aged 8–16 in a local children's home β€” many of whom are orphaned or come from difficult family situations.
    • Children from low-income families who attend our preschool and English classes.
    • Teenagers and young adults seeking motivation, language skills, and guidance for their future.
    • Local families in need of housing, educational support, and care β€” often rebuilding their lives after crisis or poverty.

    🎯 Our Core Values

    • Compassion: We believe in treating every child and volunteer like family.
    • Empowerment: We aim to equip children with education, confidence, and purpose.
    • Trust: Our small size means personal care, honesty, and close relationships with everyone involved.
    • Cultural Exchange: We believe mutual learning between locals and volunteers builds lasting understanding and peace.
    • Service: Our work is rooted in Buddhist values β€” simplicity, selflessness, and joy in giving.

    πŸ™Œ Our Team

Akuratatha is led by Sahan Wijesiri, a teacher and community leader with a heart for social service. Alongside his family and a few dedicated local helpers, Sahan provides a safe, welcoming environment for both children and international volunteers. Past volunteers often say they come as guests and leave as part of the Akuratatha family.

    🌱 What Makes Us Unique

    • We do not operate as a business β€” all volunteer fees go directly toward food, accommodation, and transportation.
    • Our volunteers become big brothers and sisters to the children, often forming deep, lasting bonds.
    • We are flexible, authentic, and truly rooted in the community β€” not a tourist project.
    • Volunteers live close to nature, experience real Sri Lankan culture, and see their impact daily.
