  • Mission

First Gen Scholars is the GPS for college access for first-generation low-income students, helping scholars navigate the college admissions process with an emphasis on graduation with no debt.

    About Us

Why is it important to support first-generation students?

High-achieving students from low-income families often aspire to be the first in their families to go to college. Yet, existing educational, economic, and cultural barriers limit them from applying to college and graduating.

Annually, in San Diego, more than 10,000 first-generation, low-income students qualify for the UCs and private schools, yet more than half are not applying. (Ed-Data, 2022).

First Gen Scholars understand the nuances of college applications and can help scholars realize that what might seem “ordinary” is what makes them extraordinary for college admissions.

Living in a refugee camp, working full-time jobs during the pandemic, or being the family translator and caretaker should all be considered as strengths that make first gens stand out.
