At Champions, we inspire kids to discover the wonder of wildlife through art, education, and hands-on experiences. By giving young people opportunities to learn about and explore nature, create something meaningful, and understand how they can make a difference, we’re helping grow the next generation of wildlife champions.

A Brief History:

Champions for Wildlife began with a mission to help save one of America’s most endangered animals: the Red Wolf. Our founders, Dale and Loti, combined wildlife conservation, art, and education to raise awareness for this incredible species.

But a classroom full of third graders helped shape what came next. After learning about Red Wolves, their immediate question was: “How can we save them?”

That question inspired the work we do today: helping kids explore wildlife, express what they discover through creativity, and understand that they can make a difference.

Our Programs & Volunteer Community:

Today, Champions for Wildlife connects kids and families with wildlife through art, education, and hands-on experiences. Our programs bring wildlife into classrooms, after-school programs, outdoor learning experiences, family events, and community spaces throughout Western North Carolina.

Volunteers are an important part of making it all happen. You might help students investigate real wildlife biofacts, encourage a child as they work on an art project, explore nature with a group of students, welcome families at an event, represent us in the community, or lend your skills to projects behind the scenes.

We know everyone has different schedules, interests, and comfort levels, so volunteering with us is designed to be flexible. Some volunteers join us regularly and become familiar faces in our programs, while others help a few times a year or contribute to individual projects. Every level of involvement matters.

Most importantly, we want volunteering to be a chance to connect: with wildlife, with kids, and with a community of people who care about making a difference. You don't have to be a wildlife expert or an artist to get involved. Bring your curiosity, enthusiasm, and willingness to help. We'll help with the rest.
