    About Us

    About Us

St. Mary Medical Center was founded in August 1923 by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word to serve the healthcare needs of Long Beach and the surrounding communities. Today, our hospital and clinics continue to deliver quality medical services and programs. Our commitment is to provide the best patient experience for everyone who needs our care.

More than 600 physicians and more than 1,350 employees work at Dignity Health St. Mary Medical Center. We have clinics on campus for children, pregnant women, families and seniors, plus specialty care clinics. There are 389 patient rooms in the hospital, most of them private, single-occupancy.

We provide the full spectrum of acute care services and also extend access through community benefits outreach. St. Mary Medical Center continues the mission to treat people with dignity and provide compassionate care of body, mind and spirit to the community we serve.

    Volunteer Opportunities

St. Mary Medical Center offers a variety of opportunities for individuals who wish to volunteer. Volunteering is a great way to contribute to the community, gain experience working in a hospital setting, and make a difference in the lives of others.

The volunteers of St. Mary Medical Center play a very important part in our healing ministry, supporting our staff and providing a "personal touch" for our patients and visitors.

Our volunteers provide a wide variety of services throughout the hospital including assisting patients and family members in various units of the hospital, and providing much needed assistance to many of our hospital departments.

Some volunteers cuddle a baby and others visit a neighbor. Some share their artistic or creative talents. Whatever draws you to volunteering, as a SMMC volunteer you will reap personal rewards as you connect with your community, build relationships with others, and add meaning to your life.
