Mission

Central Van Nuys (Central Lutheran Church) exists to strengthen and inspire the Van Nuys community.

We do this by:

• Providing food access to neighbors through weekly distribution and resources for unhoused
• Offering free English classes and education programs
• Supporting immigrants and low-income families
• Creating safe, welcoming spaces for connection and growth
• Hosting community-driven events that bring neighbors together

Our faith motivates our service — but our programs are open to everyone.

Central Van Nuys is a long-standing community hub serving neighbors across cultures, income levels, and generations.

Founded in 1929, Central has continually adapted to meet the real needs of Van Nuys. Today, we focus on practical, local impact.

We serve:

• Families experiencing food insecurity
• Immigrants building new lives
• Adults seeking English language education
• Unhoused neighbors needing dignity, resources, and connection
• Children and families who benefit from seasonal and enrichment programs

Our core programs include:

• Weekly Food Distribution serving hundreds of households
• Free Adult English Classes (with childcare support when available)
• Immigration-related support and community resource connections
• Community Garden education led by LA County Master Gardeners
• Seasonal initiatives including Back-to-School distributions, holiday food support, and Christmas programs
• RePurpose, our community-powered thrift fundraiser that funds these programs

We operate bilingually in English and Spanish and work intentionally to create welcoming, respectful spaces for all.
