Jet P. during a neighborhood gathering in Denver, CO during Idealist Days.

This recipe was inspired by Jet P. from Denver, Colorado, United States!

Building real community doesn’t require a big budget or complicated plan. Find out how Jet P. created a simple invitation to host a low-pressure, recurring neighborhood gathering to celebrate Idealist Days.

Why this recipe matters

In a time when many people feel isolated, even while being digitally connected, small in-person gatherings can rebuild trust and belonging at the neighborhood level. Jet P. tested a simple idea: what if neighbors came together once a month to connect and take one local positive action together?

1. Learn about the mission of Idealist Days.

Idealist Days are monthly dates of action where the month and day are the same number (3/3, 4/4, 5/5, etc.). On these 12 dates, communities everywhere are encouraged to gather, brainstorm positive local actions, and commit to building a better world one step at a time. Learn more about the spirit of Idealist Days and how you can get your community involved by hosting your own monthly initiative.

2. Plan a simple, informal gathering with neighbors.

The best way to invite people to join your monthly Idealist Days activity is to keep the day fun, simple, and easy to join. For the first Idealist Day, consider inviting folks to pop by on their schedule, take some materials home to learn more, and sign up to get involved on their own time. You don’t need to plan a formal agenda, but having some games, sports, or informal icebreakers ready can make it easier for people to connect with one another.

3. Invite neighbors.

Once you’ve decided what you want to do for your first Idealist Days event, invite your neighbors to stop by. Design a friendly flier using a free tool like Canva, send a simple email. You might entice neighbors to join you by offering snacks and encouraging them to bring something to share potluck-style.

4. Host and grow your neighborhood Idealist Day.

During your event, welcome neighbors and keep the atmosphere relaxed. Make sure to explain what Idealist Days means to you, and utilize an easy prompt for conversation like, “What’s one thing you appreciate about living here, and one thing you’d love to see more of?”

As conversations unfold, listen for ideas and shared interests. Take note of anything that comes up naturally, whether it’s a neighborhood activity, a way to share resources, or a simple clean-up initiative people want to launch. These are all great ideas to kick off the next month’s Idealist Day gathering.

5. Set the date for your next Idealist Day gathering.

Before wrapping up your first Idealist Day, make sure to talk to neighbors about setting a date and time for the next gathering. Does sticking to Idealist Days (dates where the month and day are the same number) work, or do you want to keep gatherings on the weekends?

In between gatherings, keep the neighborly energy alive through small, everyday interactions. Stay in touch via phone or email, say hello on the street, and remind each other of ideas you swapped on your previous Idealist Day.

Nutritional Information

“My community action recipe helped turn a simple neighborhood gathering into a real and growing local network. Through two low-pressure events, neighbors who had barely known each other began building relationships, sharing ideas for local improvements, and contributing to an opt-in communication map that is helping us stay connected in practical ways.”
