    Description

    Neighborhood Walk Partner

    1. Take weekly walks with a visually impaired adult in their own neighborhood. Volunteer may transport participant to a park or other safe walking space.
    2. Provide assistance as needed to safely walk in areas familiar to the visually impaired participant by using human guide or verbal descriptions. Note: training provided

    Basic volunteer qualifications involved with this assignment

    1. physical ability to walk at a leisurely pace for up to 1 mile on a flat surface
    2. empath and patience
    3. good listening skill
    4. ability to encourage others

    Who will be served by this assignment?

    Adults who are blind or have low vision. Some participants are elderly and some may have additional physical limitations.

    What is the anticipated benefit of this volunteer service to those receiving the service?

    1. improve overall well-being
    2. reduce social isolation
    3. build self-esteem and confidence

    What specific skills will the volunteer need?

    1. physical ability to walk up to one mile on a flat surface
    2. ability to travel to/from participant's home
    3. general knowledge of first aid

    Any additional instructions or information that would be helpful for volunteers? No previous knowledge or experience working with people who are blind or have low vision required.
