    Description

Volunteer Attorney / Organizational Legal Counsel | Justice for James Irby Sr. Foundation | Remote

The Justice for James Irby Sr. Foundation seeks an attorney to advise the organization as it develops its governance, programs, partnerships, and operations.

Founded in honor of James Anthony Irby Sr., the foundation begins with his unresolved case and is building services for other families affected by unsolved violent crimes. We need legal guidance for the foundation itself. This position is separate from legal advisors who may examine questions within an individual case.

    Areas where we need support

    • Reviewing organizational policies, board resolutions, and governance documents.
    • Advising on contracts, partnership agreements, volunteer agreements, and confidentiality documents.
    • Reviewing program procedures, including how families apply for services and how the foundation communicates what it can provide.
    • Identifying legal issues that arise as the foundation grows or works with families and partners in other states.
    • Advising leadership on privacy, records handling, public communications, and organizational risk.
    • Helping the board recognize when a matter requires specialized counsel.

    Who we’re looking for

An attorney in good standing with experience advising nonprofits or small organizations. Experience with nonprofit governance, charitable fundraising, contracts, privacy, or multistate operations is especially useful. We welcome an attorney who can serve as a general legal advisor and identify specialists when a question falls outside their practice.

You should be comfortable explaining options clearly to a developing organization and working directly with its president and board. Please disclose any potential conflicts of interest or limits on the matters you can advise on.

    Location: Remote

    Compensation: Unpaid volunteer position

Commitment: Flexible, with availability for agreed document reviews and occasional virtual meetings
