Volunteer Role: Community Companionship Fellow
Overview
The Naff Foundation Elderly Physiocare Centre offers free on-site housing to a small cohort of Community Companionship Fellows. In this resident role, you’ll spend quality time with older adults, building friendships through conversation, shared activities, and gentle social support. Your presence helps reduce loneliness, strengthens community bonds, and enhances overall wellbeing alongside the Centre’s physiocare services.
Key Objectives
• Foster meaningful one-on-one and small-group connections with elderly residents through regular conversations and shared interests.
• Support residents’ social, cognitive, and emotional wellbeing by facilitating engaging, low-intensity activities.
• Collaborate with physiocare and recreation staff to align social engagement with individual care plans.
• Contribute to a warm, inclusive community culture within the residential wings and common spaces.
Core Responsibilities
• Daily Social Rounds (2–3 hours/day): Visit assigned residents, hold conversational check-ins, read aloud, reminisce with photos/music, or play simple games.
• Friendship-Building Sessions: Establish recurring “friendship hours” (e.g., tea chats, hobby circles, storytelling clubs) focused on personal connection rather than therapy.
• Mealtime Companionship: Sit with residents who prefer company; encourage gentle social interaction and dignified independence.
• Gentle Cognitive Engagement: Facilitate activities like trivia, art journaling, music appreciation, letter writing, or language exchange.
• Intergenerational Outreach: Coordinate occasional calls or video chats with residents’ families (with staff support and consent).
• Community Events: Help plan and host birthday teas, cultural celebration nights, and movie or music evenings.
• Walk-and-Talk: Accompany ambulatory residents on short, staff-approved strolls or garden sits to enjoy fresh air and conversation.
• Collaboration & Reporting: Share brief observations with staff (mood shifts, new interests, social wins) to inform holistic care.
• Environment Stewardship: Keep social spaces tidy and welcoming; curate conversation corners with books, puzzles, and memory prompts.
Resident Benefits (Provided by the Centre)
• Free Housing: Private or shared accommodation on-site or nearby, including utilities and basic furnishings.
• Amenities Access: Common kitchen/lounge, laundry, Wi‑Fi, and staff-supported resource library for activity ideas.
• Training & Development: Orientation on elder communication, boundaries, cultural humility, dementia-friendly engagement, and confidentiality.
• Mentorship: Regular check-ins with a staff coordinator; optional peer circles with fellow residents.
• Certificates & References: Documented service hours, performance feedback, and a completion certificate.
Schedule and Commitment
• Minimum Commitment: 3–6 months preferred to nurture stable friendships.
• Weekly Hours: 10–15 hours of resident engagement, flexibly distributed; at least three “anchor” time blocks (e.g., late mornings, teatime, early evenings).
• On-Call Courtesy: Optional availability for special events or resident milestone moments.
Impact Measures
• Resident Social Touchpoints: Track weekly unique connections and time spent in meaningful conversations.
• Wellbeing Signals: Simple pre/post mood check-ins, participation rates in small-group activities, and resident feedback notes.
• Continuity of Care: Documentation of personal preferences (favorite songs, stories, conversation topics) to support consistent rapport.
Ideal Candidate Profile
• Empathetic, patient listener who enjoys unhurried conversation and respects elders’ autonomy.
• Comfortable with diverse languages, cultures, and life stories; curious and tactful.
• Reliable, discreet, and boundary-aware; honors confidentiality and follows staff guidance.
• Bonus skills: music, crafts, storytelling, photography, gardening, or basic tech help for video calls.
Boundaries and Safety
• Non-Clinical: This is a companionship role; no medical, physiotherapy, or personal care tasks.
• Consent & Dignity: Seek permission for photos, recordings, or sharing stories; defer sensitive matters to staff.
• Escalation: Promptly report concerns (falls, confusion changes, distress, or safeguarding issues) to the duty nurse or coordinator.
Application Process
• Short motivation statement on why companionship with elders matters to you.
• Brief meet-and-greet over zoom or WhatsApp
Sample Weekly Flow
• Monday: Tea & Tales circle (45 min), two one-on-one visits, garden walk.
• Tuesday: Music memories playlist and singalong; mealtime companionship.
• Wednesday: Photo album reminiscence, letter-writing aide for family updates.
• Thursday: Film matinee and post-show chat; puzzle hour.
• Friday: Cultural snack tasting; share resident-curated stories for the community board.
• Weekend (flex): Birthday tea or faith/cultural observance escort to on-site service.
A Note on Housing Culture
• Fellows model neighborly living: quiet hours, shared-space care, and mutual support.
• Occasional community dinners with staff and residents to strengthen bonds and share highlights.
