    Description

Help us care for the place where space history lives.

The American Space Museum is seeking a dependable, hands-on volunteer to help maintain and improve our indoor and outdoor spaces. As our Volunteer Facilities & Grounds Manager, you’ll play an important role in keeping the museum safe, welcoming, attractive, and ready for visitors.

This is an ideal opportunity for a retired facilities professional, property manager, tradesperson, experienced DIYer, or practical problem-solver who enjoys taking ownership of projects and seeing the results of their work.

    What You’ll Do

    • Regularly inspect indoor and outdoor areas and identify maintenance needs.
    • Complete routine upkeep and minor repairs within your skills and experience.
    • Help maintain the appearance of public spaces, work areas, entrances, walkways, and museum grounds.
    • Assist with painting, touch-ups, light carpentry, fixture replacement, and other small improvement projects.
    • Support landscaping, planting, trimming, cleanup, and seasonal beautification.
    • Create and maintain a practical list of repairs, supplies, and future projects.
    • Help prioritize maintenance needs and communicate larger concerns to museum leadership.
    • Assist with coordinating projects that require outside vendors or licensed professionals.
    • Promote safe work practices and help keep tools, supplies, and maintenance areas organized.

    What We’re Looking For

    • Experience with facilities, property maintenance, groundskeeping, construction, the trades, or hands-on home improvement is strongly preferred.
    • A dependable, organized person who can identify needs and follow projects through to completion.
    • Good judgment about which tasks can be handled in-house and which require a licensed professional.
    • Comfort working independently and communicating with museum staff and volunteers.
    • A commitment to safety and respect for a historic, visitor-focused environment.
    • An interest in museums or space history is welcome but not required.

    Why Volunteer With Us?

    • Make a visible and lasting difference in the appearance and operation of the museum.
    • Help protect the spaces that preserve and share America’s space legacy.
    • Take ownership of meaningful projects while contributing your practical skills.
    • Work with a welcoming team that values your knowledge, ideas, and initiative.
    • Enjoy a flexible schedule coordinated around your availability and the museum’s needs.

Some projects may involve standing, bending, lifting, using basic tools, or working outdoors. Tasks will be matched to the volunteer’s abilities, experience, and comfort level.

If you take pride in maintaining welcoming spaces and want to put your skills to work for a meaningful mission, we would be glad to have you on our team.
