    Description

    ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

    We seek strategic, mission-driven leaders to join our Board of Directors at Pathways to Hope Africa and guide our work in international humanitarian development. Board members serve as fiduciaries and ambassadors, providing oversight, strategic counsel, and resource mobilization to advance sustainable impact across communities worldwide. Pathways to Hope Africa aims to empower communities to achieve lasting change and sustainability in the areas of health and vocational resources thereby providing a healthy and prosperous future for generations.

    GOVERNANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

    Board members fulfill three core fiduciary duties:

    1. Duty of Care — Actively participate in board meetings (minimum 75% attendance), committee work, and strategic planning sessions; review materials thoroughly and make informed decisions
    2. Duty of Loyalty — Act in the organization's best interest, maintaining confidentiality and avoiding conflicts of interest; prioritizing mission above personal or professional gain
    3. Duty of Obedience — Ensure organizational compliance with bylaws, policies, and applicable laws; uphold mission integrity and ethical standards

    Key Governance Functions:

    • Approve annual budgets, audits, and financial reports
    • Monitor organizational performance against strategic goals
    • Hire, evaluate, and support the Executive Director
    • Review and approve major policies and strategic initiatives
    • Serve on at least one board committee (Finance, Governance, Development, or Programs)

    FUNDRAISING EXPECTATIONS

    Board members are expected to be active ambassadors and resource mobilizers:

    1. Personal Investment — Make a personally significant annual contribution reflecting your commitment to the mission
    2. Donor Cultivation — Identify, cultivate, and solicit potential donors within your personal and professional networks
    3. Event Participation — Attend and support fundraising events, campaigns, and donor cultivation activities
    4. Grant Connections — Leverage relationships with foundations, corporations, and institutional funders when appropriate

    GEOGRAPHIC PREFERENCE

    Priority consideration for candidates with:

    1. Direct experience in the developing world with emphasis on Africa.
    2. Established networks in international development.
    3. In-country relationships with government entities, NGOs, or multilateral organizations
    4. Local or diaspora community connections relevant to our program countries

    Board meetings held quarterly (in-person and virtual options available);

    IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE

    1. Passionate commitment to international development and humanitarian principles
    2. Strategic thinker with ability to see both big picture and operational details
    3. Collaborative team player who respects diverse perspectives
    4. Available for 8-12 hours monthly commitment (meetings, committee work, events)
    5. Willing to advocate publicly for the organization and its mission
    6. Reputation for integrity, ethical leadership, and sound judgment

    TERMS & COMMITMENT

    Term Length: One Year Term, renewable option (maximum three consecutive years)

    Time Commitment:

    • Quarterly board meetings (2.5 hours each)
    • Monthly committee meetings (1 hours)
    • Annual strategic retreat TBD (full day)
    • Fundraising events and donor meetings as available
