    Description

    Position Overview

Maison des Talibés is seeking motivated volunteers to support basic French and English language instruction for street-connected talibé children attending the center in Darou, Saint-Louis.

The volunteer will contribute to the facilitation of introductory language learning activities in a non-formal, supportive environment, adapted to the children’s ages, learning levels, and daily realities.

    Main Responsibilities

      • Facilitate basic French and/or English language activities (oral expression, basic vocabulary, simple sentences)
      • Help plan a curriculum
      • Use interactive and playful methods (games, songs, storytelling, visual supports)
      • Adapt teaching approaches to diverse ages and learning levels (5–18)
      • Encourage participation, confidence, and positive learning experiences
      • Work collaboratively with local staff and other volunteers
      • Contribute ideas for the development of sustainable and accessible language-learning activities

    Profile Sought

We are looking for volunteers who:

      • Have an interest or experience in language teaching, education, or community learning
      • Are patient, creative, and comfortable working with children
      • Are able to teach in a low-resource, non-formal educational context
      • Demonstrate cultural sensitivity, humility, and adaptability

Formal teaching certification is not required. Previous teaching or tutoring experience is an asset but not mandatory.

    Time Commitment

      • Minimum commitment: 1 week
      • Approximate involvement: 15 hours per week or more
      • Schedule to be defined collaboratively with the team

    Languages

      • French or English required
      • Wolof or Pulaar is an asset but not mandatory

    Ethical Framework

Volunteers are expected to work within Maison des Talibés’ ethical approach:

      • Supporting rather than substituting local actors
      • Respect for children’s dignity, rhythms, and lived realities
      • A posture of listening, encouragement, and collaboration

    What the Volunteer Gains

      • Practical experience in non-formal language education
      • Meaningful engagement in a community-based initiative
      • Cross-cultural learning in a Senegalese context
      • Collaboration with a diverse team of local and international actors
