Volunteer Position: Program Leader
GiGi’s Playhouse Indianapolis
Position Overview
The Program Leader is a vital part of the GiGi’s Playhouse team. Program Leaders guide program sessions, help participants build new skills, and create an environment where families feel welcomed, supported, and celebrated. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys working with individuals with Down syndrome and wants to make a meaningful impact on their growth, independence, and confidence.
Program Leaders work closely with Program Assistants, families, and the Executive Director to ensure that each program session is safe, purposeful, and filled with joy.
Key Responsibilities
Program Leaders are responsible for:
- Welcoming families and creating an encouraging, inclusive environment
- Facilitating program activities that support skill development in areas such as fine motor, gross motor, communication, literacy, social interaction, and self help skills
- Following established program goals while bringing creativity and enthusiasm to each session
- Modeling positive interactions and reinforcing participant engagement
- Collaborating with Program Assistants and volunteers to ensure smooth session flow
- Preparing materials, setting up the program space, and cleaning up after the session
- Tracking attendance and sharing important updates with staff
- Ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants
- Building supportive relationships with parents and caregivers
- Representing the mission, values, and culture of GiGi’s Playhouse
Preferred Qualifications
It is preferred that Program Leaders have advanced education or training in one or more of the following fields:
- Developmental therapy
- Occupational therapy
- Physical therapy
- Behavioral therapy
- Special education
- Speech-language pathology
- Social work
- Music, dance, or art instruction
- Early childhood education
- Recreational therapy
- Related disciplines supporting child or adult skill development
However, individuals with strong passion, experience working with people with disabilities, or a background in youth engagement are also encouraged to apply.

Time Commitment
- Programs typically run once per week or once per month, depending on the session
- Sessions last one hour, with additional time needed for setup and cleanup
- A minimum commitment of one program cycle is encouraged for continuity with families
Training and Support
Program Leaders receive training on:
- GiGi’s mission, values, and culture
- Program curriculum and session structure
- Participant engagement strategies
- Safety and behavior support approaches
- Volunteer policies and procedures
You will be supported by the Executive Director and team throughout your service.
