Developing strong readers requires instruction, practice, and the opportunity to hear wonderful stories read aloud every day. Our trained tutors provide instruction, but we need your help to support all the other essential activities that build solid readers, students, community members, and future leaders. You will provide the interactions and supports that most impact the equity-based achievement gap!!!
"Interactive read-alouds" accelerate all aspects of literacy development, and they're fun! Hearing stories read aloud is the best way for children to learn about the world, build vocabulary, practice inference and critical thinking, self-reflect, think creatively, and practice verbal expression.
We need 2 helpers per weekday in each K-6 location, to read to students by age group and supervise literacy and enrichment activities while tutors are working 1:1 and in small groups. The format for interactive read-alouds is quite simple, and we'll show you how.
K-5 students from nearby Leschi Elementary attend CAYA's after-school program every weekday after school, until 5:30 pm. Read-aloud and literacy activity time is from 3:30-4:30 pm.
