Open-source software doesn't maintain itself — people do. The Network Theory Applied Research Institute (NTARI), a Louisville-based 501(c)(3) with a mission to improve the internet, is raising $787,789 a year (about $65,649 a month) to field its Stewardship Board: the executive team that produces, maintains, and protects a commons of publicly maintained software called Janus Facing Architecture — tools communities operate for themselves, with no middleman platform in between.

As a volunteer writer, you'll make the case for the least glamorous and most consequential money in the nonprofit world: general operating support. You'll research foundations that fund organizational capacity and open infrastructure, then write letters of inquiry and proposals arguing that paying the stewards — engineering and technical leadership, monthly security practice, a small facility that doubles as an IT teaching center — is what keeps public software public.

You'll start from a researched plan with the full budget, and you'll work

through NTARI's Slack grant desk, where every draft gets peer review

and nothing is submitted without final approval. Strong fit for a

writer who enjoys the big institutional argument.
