Let's build a Soup-er Squad!
Details
Description
What is a Soup-er Squad?
A Soup-er Squad is a group of volunteers that is willing to cook and serve a lot of delicious soup to feed guests staying at Nativity House Shelter.
Scope and Scale:
Nativity House Shelter is 167-bed shelter for adult men and women experiencing homelessness. We serve 3 times a day, 365 days a year. Our kitchen runs on "volunteer power". Nearly all of the food that we serve is supplied either through grocery rescue donations or meal groups that commit to covering specific meal dates.
Why soup?
- It makes people feel warm, cozy and cared for.
- Simple soups can feed A LOT of people.
- Delicious soup does not need to be expensive to make.
- "Soup bars" are fun and offer a sense of variety for folks who don't often get a lot of choice or variety.
Whether it's chicken noodle, chili, tomato or matzo ball- a hot bowl of soup makes everyone feel loved.
The Basics
- All group members must be at least 18 years old to volunteer onsite (no exceptions)
- Volunteers must pass a background check (processed by Catholic Community Services staff at no cost to volunteers)
- Anyone handling food must wash their hands, wear food safety gloves (supplied) and follow standard food safety best practices
- Youth volunteers can help cook offsite
How to build a Soup-er Squad
- Pick a team leader to complete our online registration form - http://bit.ly/VSregSW
- Everyone else on the team would just need to complete a group member packet (coordinated through the group leader)
- The group leader will be asked to obtain a Washington Food Worker /Food Handlers Card.
Soup teams would be responsible for supplying (donating) the ingredients that they plan to use for cooking, picking their own recipes, cooking, serving and cleaning up.
