    HR Recruiter (Volunteer)

    A Free Bird is a New York City–based nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering children and teens diagnosed with cancer through the healing power of the arts. We support young artists in exploring creative outlets such as music, writing, painting, acting, and more. Through our programs—Dream Big, Take Flight, and Fly Free—we help children find hope, resilience, and self-expression through artistic exploration.

    Position Summary

    A Free Bird is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented HR Recruiter to support our Human Resources team in identifying and onboarding talented volunteers and staff members. This role focuses on managing candidate pipelines, reviewing applications, scheduling interviews, and helping maintain an efficient and organized recruitment process.

    The HR Recruiter will work closely with the HR team and department leaders to ensure A Free Bird attracts individuals who align with our mission and values. This role offers valuable hands-on experience in nonprofit recruiting, talent acquisition, and HR operations.

    Key Responsibilities

    Review incoming applications and resumes for open roles across departments

    Conduct initial candidate screenings and shortlisting based on job requirements

    Coordinate and schedule interviews between candidates and hiring managers

    Maintain recruitment trackers and applicant records in an organized system

    Draft and post job descriptions on recruitment platforms and internal channels

    Communicate professionally with candidates regarding application status and next steps

    Support the HR team in improving recruitment workflows and hiring strategies

    Assist with onboarding preparation for new volunteers and team members

    Ensure alignment between candidates’ experience and A Free Bird’s mission

    Qualifications & Competencies

    Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Psychology, Communications, or a related field

    Interest in recruitment, talent acquisition, or nonprofit HR operations

    1-2 years of experience in recruitment, talent acquisition, or HR operations

    Strong organizational and time management skills

    Excellent written and verbal communication abilities

    Ability to review resumes and identify relevant qualifications

    Comfortable working independently in a remote environment

    Proficiency in Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive, Calendar)

    Professional, responsive, and detail-oriented

    Additional Information

    This is a remote volunteer position requiring a minimum 3-month commitment

    Expected weekly commitment is 5–10 hours per week

    Must have access to a computer, phone, and reliable internet connection

    Weekly check-ins via phone or video call may be required
