Description
Position: Crisis Mentor
Organization: First Light Florida
Location: Mount Dora, FL (hybrid — in-person + virtual mentoring options)
Type: Volunteer
The Role: Crisis Mentors provide direct, one-on-one support to individuals navigating crisis — teens (ages 11–17), young adults (ages 18–35), and veterans and their families. This is a relational, trust-building role at the front line of our mission.
Core Responsibilities
- Provide consistent, one-on-one mentoring to an assigned mentee
- Maintain regular contact per FLF's mentoring cadence (e.g., weekly check-ins)
- Recognize signs of escalating crisis and follow FLF's escalation/referral protocol
- Document session notes per FLF confidentiality and reporting standards
- Attend mandatory mentor training and ongoing supervision/check-ins
- Maintain appropriate boundaries per FLF's code of conduct
What We're Looking For
- Genuine care for people in crisis and comfort sitting with hard conversations
- Reliability — mentoring only works if mentors show up consistently
- Ability to pass a background check (required for anyone working with minors)
- Lived experience (personal, family, or professional) with crisis, mental health, military service, or youth work is a strong plus, not required
- Willingness to complete FLF's mentor training program before matching
