    Role Overview

    We are seeking a Human Resources Lead to oversee and optimize the volunteer experience—from recruitment through onboarding and engagement. This role is key to nurturing a vibrant, mission-driven community of engineers, designers, and changemakers.

    As a volunteer-led organization, Helpful Engineering does not manage payroll; instead, this position focuses on strengthening volunteer recruitment, onboarding, development, and retention. If you’re passionate about leading people, improving systems/processes, and fostering a thriving community, we’d love to hear from you.

    The commitment is a sustainable 5–10 hours per week.

    Key Responsibilities

    1. Recruitment Management
      • Partner with Director, Talent Acquisition to develop innovative strategies to attract and retain skilled volunteers
      • Collaborate with Marketing and Talent Acquisition to design social media campaigns and targeted outreach
    2. Onboarding & Offboarding
      • Design and continuously refine onboarding processes that deliver a welcoming and efficient experience
      • Oversee the offboarding and exit processes, maintaining positive relationships and gathering feedback for improvement
    3. Volunteer Engagement & Morale
      • Implement programs and activities that boost volunteer satisfaction, recognition and retention
      • Coordinate volunteer appreciation and recognition initiatives
      • Conduct surveys and listening sessions to capture insights and enhance volunteer experiences
    4. Cross-Team Collaboration
      • Work closely with department leads to understand volunteer needs and match skills to opportunities
      • Represent People Operations in organizational strategy sessions and provide data-driven insights
    5. Compliance & Process Improvement
      • Ensure recruiting, onboarding, and offboarding processes adhere to organizational policies and applicable regulations
      • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and scalability

    What You’ll Bring

    • Experience: 3+ years in People Operations, HR, or related roles (preferably with nonprofit or volunteer management experience)
    • Leadership: Proven track record of managing and developing teams
    • Collaboration: Strong communication and interpersonal skills; experience partnering with Marketing or Communications is a plus.
    • Organizational Skills: Ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects simultaneously
    • Tech Savvy: Comfortable with HRIS or volunteer management systems; familiarity with social media and digital recruiting tools
