    Description

    🔹 Position Overview

    NTARI is seeking a volunteer Infrastructure Engineer to assist in deploying and maintaining a secure, publicly accessible internet service on a aligned with our mission of community-operated infrastructure.

    This role involves designing and implementing a production-ready Linux-based network service, establishing security best practices, ensuring high availability, and documenting operational procedures. The selected volunteer will work closely with NTARI leadership to architect and deploy this system from the ground up.

    Specific architectural details will be shared during the interview process.

    🔹 Key Responsibilities

    • Design and deploy a secure, production-grade Linux-based network service
    • Configure and harden server infrastructure for public accessibility
    • Implement encryption, authentication, and rate limiting where appropriate
    • Establish monitoring, alerting, and uptime tracking systems
    • Document configuration, maintenance procedures, and incident response workflows
    • Coordinate hardware/software selection within budget constraints
    • Support phased expansion of the service as it scales
    • Collaborate remotely with NTARI’s workspace administrator

    🔹 Required Qualifications

    • Strong Linux system administration experience
    • Solid understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, routing, firewalls)
    • Experience deploying publicly accessible services
    • Familiarity with security hardening and abuse prevention practices
    • Experience working with VPS or cloud environments
    • Ability to write clear technical documentation
    • Comfortable working independently in a volunteer capacity

    🔹 Preferred Experience (Strong Plus)

    • Experience with internet infrastructure services
    • Familiarity with encryption standards and secure transport protocols
    • Experience implementing monitoring/observability systems
    • Exposure to distributed or redundant system design
    • Interest in digital rights, decentralization, or open internet principles
