    Description

Why this role matters: Your independent oversight keeps every dollar accountable. That's how donors and funders keep trusting Beta OS, and how money keeps reaching technology that protects the endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales.

About Beta OS: Beta OS is a Washington nonprofit corporation that builds open source technology. It works with a collaborative group that works on the Orcasound website, where anyone can listen live to hydrophones in the Salish Sea. We're working with Orca Conservancy as our fiscal sponsor.

    What you'll do

    • Hold a board position. You'll be one of two members of the Beta OS Board of Directors, alongside me as Founder.
    • Review and approve compensation and expenses for Beta OS staff, as the director with no personal stake in those decisions.
    • Act as a signer on Beta OS bank accounts and review statements.
    • Keep financial records and give the board simple reports.
    • Advise on budgets, fiscal sponsorship and nonprofit financial practice.
    • Take part in board actions at least quarterly.

    Who you are

    • Experienced in accounting, bookkeeping, finance or nonprofit treasury.
    • Independent: not paid by Beta OS, with no family or business ties to its staff.
    • Based in Western Washington, the Salish Sea, Victoria, Vancouver BC, the western Canadian coast and its islands, or coastal Alaska. Beta OS works in the homelands and waters of Coast Salish and other Tribes and First Nations and seeks to work in partnership with them. Members of Tribes and First Nations of the Pacific Coast are warmly encouraged to apply. Every applicant is reviewed on the same professional qualifications.
    • Committed to Southern Resident Killer Whale and marine conservation, with work you can point to.
    • Nice to have: nonprofit board experience.

Commitment: remote. About 2 to 4 hours a week, sometimes more, sometimes less. The load varies.

Compensation: this is a volunteer role. No Beta OS board member is paid for board work.
