Friends of Detroit Animal Care and Control
Position Summary
The Treasurer serves as the Board’s chief financial officer and is responsible for safeguarding the financial assets of Friends of Detroit Animal Care and Control (FoDACC). The Treasurer oversees the organization’s financial management, accounting practices, budgeting, financial reporting, banking relationships, tax filings, and internal financial controls. The Treasurer works closely with the President, Board of Directors, volunteer bookkeeper, CPA, and other financial professionals to ensure the organization remains financially sound and compliant with all applicable laws and regulations.
The Treasurer is a non-voting member of the Board of Directors.
Primary Responsibilities
- Maintain custody of the Corporation’s funds and financial records.
- Oversee accurate accounting of all receipts, disbursements, grants, and restricted funds.
- Ensure timely bank reconciliations and review monthly financial statements.
- Present financial reports and recommendations to the Board of Directors.
- Assist in preparing the annual operating budget and monitor financial performance throughout the year.
- Oversee cash management, banking relationships, and investment accounts.
- Ensure appropriate financial policies, internal controls, and segregation of duties are maintained.
- Coordinate preparation and filing of required federal, state, and local tax filings, including IRS Form 990.
- Support grant budgeting, financial reporting, and audit activities, when applicable.
- Recommend improvements to financial systems, software, and accounting procedures.
- Recruit, supervise, and support volunteer bookkeeping resources as appropriate.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and transparent financial records.
- Ensure financial reporting is provided regularly to the Board.
- Protect organizational assets through appropriate internal controls.
- Maintain compliance with applicable financial, tax, and regulatory requirements.
- Support long-term financial sustainability through sound financial planning and oversight.
Qualifications
- Experience in accounting, finance, bookkeeping, banking, or nonprofit financial management.
- Working knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles and financial reporting.
- Familiarity with QuickBooks, online banking platforms, spreadsheets, and related financial software.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- High degree of integrity, accuracy, and attention to detail.
- Ability to present financial information clearly to non-financial audiences.
- Ability to work collaboratively with the Board, volunteers, CPA, and other advisors.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience serving on a nonprofit board or finance committee.
- CPA, accounting, finance, banking, or related professional experience.
- Experience with nonprofit budgeting, grant management, audits, or IRS Form 990 preparation.
- Knowledge of nonprofit internal controls and financial best practices.
Time Commitment
- Approximately 2–3 hours per week, including regular on-site participation at Detroit Animal Care and Control.
Compensation
This is an unpaid volunteer Board position.
