A Black man donates items to a church charity drive

Many of us may feel more inspired during the holiday season to connect with former colleagues, friends, family, and our community. That’s what makes this time of year so special—it encourages us to see outside of ourselves to devote more time and attention to the people (and cause areas!) we care about.

It’s also one of the best times to try volunteering. If you find yourself with some extra time on your hands and a desire to make the most of it, why not try to volunteer this holiday season?

Five holiday volunteering opportunities

During this time of giving, connect with others with these meaningful volunteer opportunities:

Serve a Community Meal

Throughout the season, many community centers, nonprofits, and shelters host holiday meals. You can help neighbors facing food insecurity by volunteering at a local food pantry, or helping to prepare or serve food so that more folks can enjoy a warm meal and good company.

Help With Food Packing/Distribution

Food banks are most in demand during the holiday season, and just a few hours of your time can provide them with much-needed relief. Volunteer to sort donations or prepare grocery boxes and make a real difference for those who rely on donated meals to feed their families.

Host or Donate to a Clothing Drive

If you’re gathering loved ones this season, consider asking them to bring gently-used winter clothing when they visit. Pooling these items is an easy way for everyone to feel involved, and it helps those without adequate seasonal clothing stay healthy, comfortable, and warm throughout the winter.

Join a Mutual Aid Network

Mutual aid groups operate throughout the year, but the holidays bring increased need for everything from warm meals to school-break childcare to emergency supplies. If you’re looking to volunteer this holiday season, reach out to a local network to see how your family or friend group can help.

Participate in a Charity Walk or Run

Holiday fun runs often raise money for causes like hunger relief, youth programs, or health initiatives. They’re a fun and physically active way to support a cause that counts. Gather a few folks to join you in raising money for a special cause, and complete the charity walk or run together as part of a new holiday tradition!

Volunteering during the holidays is a meaningful way to support your community and connect with others. Even a small contribution of time or resources can have a real impact for those in need.
