Started in 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, an African American historian and educator, Black History month was originally a week long, until it was expanded by President Gerald Ford in 1976, largely in part to the Civil Rights Movement of the late 1960s.

Black History Month is meant to honor the vast spectrum of Black American experiences and the countless ways the Black community has enriched American society, despite the overwhelming obstacles presented by systemic oppression that, in many ways, are still ongoing today.

1. Black Farmers Fund, Remote Role, New York

The Black Farmer’s Fund nurtures Black community wealth & health by investing in Black agricultural systems in the Northeast. They believe Black farmers, business owners, and land stewards should benefit equitably from financing, intellectual capital, technical assistance, networking, and public policies. They are hiring a Business Support Director to work remotely in New York. 

2. Black Clergy Collaborative of Memphis, Memphis, TN

The Black Clergy Collaborative of Memphis is committed to expressing the voice of the Black Church and supporting its resurgence as a catalyst for social justice. They help their members to work at the intersection of theology and social justice, taking action on an agenda to address inequality in Memphis and Shelby County. They are hiring a Civil Engagement Coordinator and a Lead Community Organizer to work on-site in or near Memphis, TN.

3. Black Girls Do STEM, St. Louis, MO

Black Girls Do STEM is a program for middle school aged Black girls (grades 6-8) to explore various STEM careers across multiple industries. Students conduct hands-on experiments in workshops designed to have them think and problem solve like real world scientists while also creating products and implementing scientific methods. They are hiring a Program Manager to work on-site in or near St. Louis, MO. 

4. Black Women’s Blueprint, Queens County, NY 

Black Women’s Blueprint, Inc. is a civil and human rights organization that is taking action to secure social, political, and economic equality for Black women. They engage in progressive research, historical documentation, support movement building, and organize on social justice issues steeped in the struggles of Black women within their communities and within dominant culture. They are hiring a Licensed Clinician/Counselor (LMSW or LCSW) to work on-site in or near Queens County, NY.

5. The Black Farmers Collective, Remote Role, Washington

The Black Farmers Collective wants to build a Black-led food system by developing a cooperative network of food system actors, acquiring and stewarding land, facilitating food system education, and creating space for Black liberation in healing and joy. They are hiring a Development & Communications Manager to work remotely in or near Seattle, WA. 

6. California Black Power Network, Long Beach, CA 

The California Black Power Network is a growing, united ecosystem of Black empowering grassroots organizations working together to change the lived conditions of Black Californians by dismantling systemic and anti-Black racism. They are hiring a Communications Director and a Policy Associate to work in a hybrid capacity in or near California. 

7. I Be Black Girl, Remote Role, Nebraska 

I Be Black Girl is a collective that creates space for Black women, femmes, and girls to access their full potential through economic liberation and reproductive freedom. They are hiring a Development Coordinator to work in a remote capacity in or near Omaha, NE. 

8. Lighthouse Foundation of Chicagoland, Chicago, IL 

Lighthouse Foundation of Chicagoland is a Black LGBTQ+-led, multiracial social justice organization that advances justice for Black LGBTQ+ people across Chicagoland through empowerment, education, and entertainment. They are hiring a Contract Director of Communications to work in a hybrid capacity in or near Chicago, IL.

9. Taproot Earth, Slidell, LA 

What will it take to build a world where we can all live, rest, and thrive in the places that we love? Welcome to Taproot Earth. Rooted in 17 years of Gulf South organizing, they have emerged as a new international organization to address our collective climate reality. They are hiring a Human Resources Manager to work in or near Slidell, LA in a hybrid capacity.

10. Barbershop Books, Inc., Philadelphia, PA 

This organization’s mission is to inspire Black boys and other vulnerable children to read for fun through child-centered, culturally responsive, and community-based programming and content. They are hiring a Philadelphia Program Coordinator to work in a hybrid capacity in or near Philadelphia, PA. 

11. Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc., Washington, DC

Founded in 1976, the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF) is a nonprofit organization focused on eliminating disparities within the global Black community by developing leaders, informing policy, and educating the public. They are hiring a Program Coordinator to work in a hybrid capacity in or near Washington, DC. 

12. Illinois Black Advocacy Initiative, Illinois

The Illinois Black Advocacy Initiative is a statewide Black-centered organization dedicated to building power through organizing and systems change to secure equity and justice for Black Illinoisans. They are hiring a Communications Director to work in a hybrid capacity in or near Illinois, US.
