  • Mission

Save Lives and Bring Hope to Those Affected by Suicide

Established in 1987, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is a voluntary health organization that gives those affected by suicide a nationwide community empowered by research, education and advocacy to take action against this leading cause of death.

AFSP is dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide, including those who have experienced a loss. AFSP creates a culture that’s smart about mental health by engaging in the following core strategies:

    • Funding scientific research
    • Educating the public about mental health and suicide prevention
    • Advocating for public policies in mental health and suicide prevention
    • Supporting survivors of suicide loss and those affected by suicide

    About Us

This plan builds on progress AFSP made in implementing the previous plan and identifies issues that are important for AFSP to concentrate on over the next 3 years, including:

    • Increasing the investment in research, education, advocacy and support
    • Serving individuals and communities across the U.S., particularly those at highest risk for suicide & those disproportionately impacted
    • Developing strategic partnerships to scale suicide prevention in the U.S.
    • Using data to measure and communicate impact
    • Strengthening AFSP’s network of community-based chapters

AFSP will be relentless in its efforts to achieve the desired outcomes within each strategy and to advance its mission to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.
