At EduCARE India, we translate the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals into lived reality, one community at a time.

Since 1994, EduCARE India has worked with communities in five Indian states. Today we work in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh, in the foothills of the Himalayas.

We work on four things:

• Safety: getting villages ready for disasters, lowering their risks, and responding when one hits.
• Health: care and support closer to home for older people and households that struggle to reach it.
• Environment: restoring local land, water, plants and wildlife.
• Income: helping women, young people and village groups earn and manage money.

We help communities build solutions that will keep working without us.

Every community already has its protagonists: women’s self-help groups, health workers, masons, youth looking to build a livelihood, and retirees with time and talent to spare. Together, we explore what they can achieve for themselves and their community. We encourage people to take the first step, and stay alongside them as they gain confidence and begin taking the lead.

And we bring what helps them get there: training and qualifications, connections to people and institutions beyond the community, and the tools and resources they need to keep going. Then, together, we build what the community needs. Things like home-care services, disaster-response groups, village shops, and more.

Everything we build is built to be handed over. The people in the community run it themselves after we leave.

Success, for us, is a community that no longer needs us.

Our base is the Mission Hill complex in Kangra town, with our offices, training halls, a library, a mapping and radio lab, our disaster-management resource centre, and accommodation.

Our volunteer-internships are unpaid. A monthly fee covers room, meals, training and support, and it is less than a stay costs us. Volunteer-interns who show they can lead can go on to a paid fellowship.
