Girl Reports, Inc.

Girl Reports is a community-based girls’ education and empowerment program. We give underserved girls a platform for self-expression, leadership, and skill development through journalism education. Our mission is to empower girls to write their own future.

Girl Reports, Inc. is an international non-profit organization that provides education and empowerment opportunities to underserved girls. The three branches of our organization, in education, research, and social enterprise, form a unique ecosystem of programs and services that support girls in reaching their greatest potential. We understand empowerment as expanding personal choice and strengthening voice. Through our education program and our broader engagement with the local community, Girl Reports builds capacity for girls to exercise choice and use their voices in many spheres of influence, including family, community, market, and state.

Our education branch hosts our flagship journalism program, offering girls aged 13-18 after school training focused on four key competencies: English communication, computer literacy, civic engagement, and leadership. In addition to studying the principles and importance of journalism, participants explore their rights to inquire and express themselves. They also use meetings as a workshop to plan and organize their own community news magazine. This project-based learning method is what differentiates our program from other education courses. The magazine gives girls the opportunity to explore their voice and their society, while also learning bedrock skills that pave the way for increased autonomy and a better quality of life. Furthermore, the magazine is a tool for education, literacy, and community building beyond the classroom. It breaks barriers to participation in our program and inspires support, while providing unique insight into the lives of our participants.
